Shine A Light On Postpartum Depression Awareness – Postpartum Depression is a common mental illness suffered by many mums. Here at Mummy It’s OK we are always pleased to support and help raise awareness of this maternal mental illness. The campaign we are helping to raise awareness of is ‘Shine A Light On Postpartum Depression’.
Today I am please to introduce you Terri Reid. Terri is a young mum from Liverpool. After the birth of her second child she was diagnosed with postpartum depression. She spent some time at the Clock View Hospital in Walton after she began self-harming and attempted to take her life. I am pleased to say Terri has begun her recovery after being able to talk to a psychologist.
Terri realises the importance of getting help and has made it her mission to raise awareness of postpartum depression and encourage mums to seek help.
She has made it her mission to ‘Shine A Light On Postpartum Depression’. I am honoured to help her with this.

Mummy It’s OK : How Old Were You When You Had Postpartum Depression and What Were Your Symptoms?
Terri : I gave birth to my second child when I was 21, she was born in the February but before I even gave birth I felt that something was wrong with me, just putting it down to my hormones, getting ready to give birth and the terrible pregnancy I had with her I didn’t dwell on it but the feeling of dread wouldn’t go.
Straight after I gave birth I was over the moon all the feelings of dread left and I was just so happy, I would say about 3-4 weeks afterwards is when I noticed the biggest change, I felt alone, unworthy, overwhelmed, unhappy- this was the biggest and worse feeling of all, I was thinking I was the worst mother for bringing such a wonderful thing into the world the best thing to happen and I was not happy about it.
I started to resent and actually hate myself, ‘I wouldn’t go out, I would even keep my eldest out of nursery and tell people she was sick so I didn’t have to go out and no one would come and see me. I would just sit in a dark living room with the eldest just playing upstairs doing what ever. But I didn’t have the symptoms of what I was reading and being told what postnatal depression was. I didn’t resent the baby, or any other feelings towards the baby, to be honest I was so numb I didn’t feel anything towards anyone only myself.
Mummy It’s OK : What Help Did You Receive?
Terri : The help at the start I received I am completely disgusted by! I went to my GP with the advice off my hv and told her how I was feeling she gave me some antidepressants, told me to go back a few weeks later so I did. Things had only gotten worse for me and she asked me if I had a plan to do anything I I said yes and told her what I was wanting to do. She then just prescribed me some more tablets and again told me to go back a few weeks later.
That day I ended up taking an overdose of all the medication she had given me plus what I could find in the house, my partner noticed something wasn’t right in the evening and took me to an out of hours after making me an appointment, with lots of effort from me I was trying to hide what I had done and how I was feeling but my partner and the doctor eventually got it out of me and I was sent to the Royal crisis team and from there I was sent to clockview hospital.
The help I received was amazing, I had people to talk to when ever I needed them, I had therapy sessions and occupational therapy to help, I was being monitored and watched but not once did I feel like I was locked up or had done something wrong. It took a while for myself to start feeling okay, nearly two years, but if it wasn’t for the out of hours doctor I would have done something really silly.
Mummy It’s OK : How Are You doing Now?
Terri : I am doing so much better now, I see my cpn once every 3-4 months I will be discharged from them very soon. I had a brain tumour removed in December and everything is looking good.
Mummy It’s OK : What Advise Would You Offer To Other Mums That Are Just Starting Out On Their Postpartum Depression Recovery?
Terri : The best and only real advice I can give is just talk about your problems, feelings and anything else you think you need to talk about even if it’s not remotely related. The things that hold you down will not in any way be helping in your recovery if you keep hold of them. No matter how hard or even how insignificant you may feel they are they need to be out in the air and off your chest.
Just talking about things really helps. Talk to family, friends, professionals, even if you can actually say it or put things into words, write them down just release the energy that is not needed and it will be a great start to helping you get better and back to yourself.
Mummy It’s OK : Why Did You start The Shine A Light On Postpartum Depression Campaign?
Terri : The main reason I started this is to help other mums, no matter how old, young, any situation they are in it doesn’t matter. No one is safe or immune to getting this awful illness and it is not their fault or anyone else’s.
I wish when I was going through it I had seen, heard or just had someone or something to tell me you know what, it’s okay, it’s normal it’s not your fault. The most of the start I was googling it to see if that’s what was going on, never google, it does not help.
Most of the symptoms I was reading was not what I was experiencing so it can hit you in many ways.
To help share and spread this wonderful message Terri with the help of Fixers have created some baby bibs to offer a message of support to women suffering postpartum depression. The hope is women will be encouraged to seek support and speak out if they are struggling.
Fixers are a small charity that work with young people – aged 16-25 – who campaign about anything from suicide, to drugs to mental health conditions an more. Please do check out their website if you are young person who needs help with any of these conditions.
‘I want the bibs to show people that it’s okay to ask for help and that once you do it’s not as scary. I want to shine a light on the condition so that other mums don’t have to suffer alone.’
